Communicating on the internet

Email uses client/server technology. If you have ever sent or received an email you have been a  part of this connection.Whether you use a piece of software designed solely for the purpose of handling email, such as Microsoft Outlook or Eudora, or a web-based client provided by a service, such as Gmail or Hotmail, the client is what lets you perform tasks such as reading and sending email messages and downloading attachments. If you are using a program like Outlook, you will need to give it information that allows it to connect to the email server that you use.

After you send the email the first step is that your email client connects to a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server for your email domain (the part of your email address after the @ symbol). The SMTP server then looks at the domain of the address that the email is being sent to and queries a Domain Name System (DNS) server to ask for the IP address of the domain in question. Once it has that information, the SMTP server connects to that domain and passes the message along to its SMTP server. There are two types of incoming-mail servers: POP3 and IMAP. The biggest difference between the two is that when you get an incoming email from a POP3 server, you download it from the server onto the computer you’re using. If you get email from an IMAP server, the email stays on the server until you delete it, so you can access it from any computer you can use to log in to your server.

Instant messaging (IM) has been around since the early 1990s. It grew up as an alternative to chat rooms for people who wanted to chat in real time over the Internet. Today, instant-messaging software allows you to do a lot more than chat with other Internet users. With IM, you can send and receive files, create chat rooms, and even send messages to and from a cell phone. Before you can use IM, you must first download the client software for whatever service you want to use. Once you have the client software installed on your computer, you can run the client to have it connect to the server. Once you've connected to the server, you can log in or create a new account.

What is the internet?

The Internet is the world’s largest wide area network. It is made up of millions of smaller networks. Everything that you find online, including web pages, email, instant messaging, FTP sites, online games, and more, comes to you through the Internet.It is the Largest Wan ever. The internet is used by everyone. Over 2 billion users.The Internet is rooted in the early 1960s, in a US government research project run by the Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA). The researchers had three computers, two in California and one in Boston, and they wanted to be able to access each of them, regardless of their location. Their work to make this happen led to the idea that would become the Internet.

What is a protocol?

Rules for how computers in a network communicate with each other. These rules are called network protocols. Protocols control or enable the connection, communication, and data transfer between two computing endpoints. The first network protocol was established on the ARPANET network in 1969. By 1971 the system was being used for email, and in 1973 file transfers via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) began. By 1981 there were 213 computers connected to the network.

What is DNS?

DNS is like a phone book for the Internet; it looks up a host name and returns an IP address, or vice versa. When you type www.cnn.com into a web browser, the application has to go to a DNS server to find the IP address associated with www.cnn.com. Each part of the Internet has DNS servers, and each computer is configured to query a specific DNS server. Usually home computers are configured to query their ISP’s name server or a free DNS name server. Applications send a request called a DNS lookup to the computer’s DNS server. This DNS server only has information about a limited number of host names and IP address.

Trends and Factors

What 3 trends do you see in computer evolution? AND Why?
Three trends that I see in computer evolution are  smaller body's because all the laptop computers now are getting smaller and thinner. Second we are making faster CPU systems, now days our CPU systems are faster than computer's CPU systems from 5 years ago. Finally we are making computers more portable. Computers that we carry around today fit in our back packs while computers 10 years ago couldn't and just sat on the desk.
Name 3 factors that drive technological innovation?
Three factors that drive technological innovation are consumer demand. The second one is the need for more efficient computers to do more efficient work. Finally we have the need to achieve more, and to achieve what no other has achieved before us.

What is POIT

Principles of information technology. I thinks is that we are going to learn the basics of computers. We are also going to learn about IT which is the study of information. While in the POIT class we will do many things. For example we will learn about the basic works of computers and take them apart.

Second we will learn about what makes the computer work. While doing this section we will learn basic coding. We shalt also learn on jobs in the IT industry. Finally we will learn about producers of computers and which computers are the best made. That is what I think we will be learning about in POIT.
